A retro Dad ponders.. Why do folks hate on Tim Tebow so much?

As I sit here waiting for the Denver Broncos second round playoff game to begin, I can't help but wonder why so many folks despise, dislike, or have a negative view about quarterback Tim Tebow.  Comedians love to make fun of him, thuggish NFL stars rip on him and mock his praying, and many simply want to see him fail.

In Colorado, people either love him or hate him, and I mean HATE him.  When I ask folks who start complaining about him what it is exactly that they hate.. they usually come up with one of these three excuses:

"He sucks"
"He's overrated"
"I'm sick of hearing about him"

Well.. do you know what this retro Dad hates?  He hates when sports stars who are ridiculous excuses for Men, are put up on pedestals.  Let me hip you pallie..

You've got huge superstars who send picture messages of their junk to young women.. guys who don't know the meaning of "No means No".. guys who bang every pop star and hot girl they can get their paws on, and others who are physically abusive to animals and their significant others.  However, since these cats are athletes who put up staggering numbers and fantasy sports points, these things are overlooked.  Now let's take a look at Tim Tebow shall we?

Whatever your thoughts on Tim Tebow, no one can deny that he is a driven individual who gives 110% and STILL pushes himself to do better.  The way he's inspired his team which succinctly has the second youngest offense in the NFL, is nothing short of amazing!  Folks say he's not very good or that he's overrated, but really.. this is the kids very first season in the NFL as a starting quarterback.  Are we now that impatient as a culture, that we need to see pro NFL skills as soon as you're out of college?  Sure he's no John Elway,  but folks seem to forget that it took years for John Elway to hone his skills and become the exceptional quarterback he was.  In short, I see a young quarterback that keeps adapting and growing with every game he plays.

As most people know, Tim Tebow is a devout Christian.. wherein lies a big reason for much of the hating and jesting that is directed towards him.  I can't tell you how many times I've seen Tim Tebow in the news doing charity work with sick kids (something he's done since college).  No drama, no trash talk, only an uplifting spirit who always seems positive and inspiring.   People act as if he is forcing Christianity down peoples throats because he prays on the sidelines.  Others think he believes that God is winning football games for him which is ludicrous in itself.

The NFL put a mic on him during a game this season, and at one point you could overhear him praying.  Rather than simply praying for a win, you could hear him saying "No matter what, win or lose, let me honor you".

You can see that video and audio of Tim Tebow here:
I've been a Broncos fan since the tender age of eight, and the energy and excitement Tim Tebow has brought to this franchise is like non other I've ever seen.  That's saying something, considering I faithfully followed John Elway's entire career!

Now do I get upset at all of the comedic prodding the poor kid gets constantly?  Not really.  Tim Tebow doesn't let it bother him, so why should I?   And as my Grandfather used to say.. "success is the best revenge".  As this kid continues to succeed, I look forward to seeing the wind taken right out of the naysayers sails.  Win or lose, I will continue to be a Tim Tebow and Denver Broncos fan.  Either way, it should be a fun and exciting ride.

In closing, I leave you with this great Tebow commercial
(it must really tick the haters off!)

  1. He was a spokeperson for Focus on the Family, one of the most hateful groups in America. Enough said. Shame on Tebow!

    1. Anonymous: Don't get me wrong.. I've seen many (young) stars and athletes with little real life experience become spokesman or supporters for iffy organizations. AND.. what I see of Focus on the Family riding the Tebow wave to push their own beliefs (no matter if you agree with them or not) makes me ill.

However.. he was raised being told he was saved rather than discarded. I can see why he made that decision during that point in his young life.

  2. I totally agree with what you're saying Mr. Cool Dad !

I think what it is, is that Christians have a bad name, it's not "cool" to be Christian, and it seems like it is "in" to make fun of Christians, especially if they are celebrities/athletes. There seems to be a notion that you can't be a celebrity and a devout Christian. That is what I think all the fuss is about, and I am glad that he is not listening to others, rather staying focused on God.

    1. Thanks Senora! There were other devout Christians in the NFL before Tebow, and they didn't get flack like he does. In this day and age, many people view it as weird.. weak.. and crazy.

  3. Congrats, Darrin, you got your first cowardly anonymous commenter! Zoinks!

Well, I don't know anything about Focus on the Family other than the commercial I saw earlier in the game...but I agree 100% that he seems like an awfully nice, good hearted guy and the hate is undeserved. And BTW, even though I'm a Patriots fan I'm sick of hearing about Tom Brady. All they talk about is his vapid wife, who I really can't stand.

    1. I don't know much about them either, nor do I care to delve into what they're all about. I had no clue his wife causes such a media blitz in your parts. Funny how different regions have their very own "Kardashians". LOL

  4. Ever notice how the haters (regardless of who is being hated) are the ones that need to say something bad about someone in order to make themselves feel better?

    1. Yeah. It might be insecurity, or just plain bitterness.

  5. Yep, it's pretty sad that he gets so much hate spewed at him. He's a great guy and a true role model (not that I advocate sports figures as role models at all). I hope that he can stay positive and not let the bilge bring him down. I think a lot of people hate on Christians because Christianity tells them that their lifestyle is wanting, and people don't want to hear that. God forbid someone tell them that they are wrong about something. My hat's off to you Tebow. Don't let the crap turn you into another Favre or Vick. Hat's off to you too, Darrin! I love the blog! Found it via U of M a while back.

I'm not very active in the M.U.S.C.L.E. community anymore, but swing by from time to time to see what's going on in that world. I DO plan on doing a colossal write up on M.U.S.C.L.E. very soon though!! I saw the news about the new OMFG line coming out. Very exciting!! I will definitely have to get some!
